What Should I Look for in a Nashville-Area Community if Health, Activity and Staying Connected Matter Most?

Look for three things: medical care close by, places to be involved, and a safe, pleasant place to walk. Get those right and everything else gets easier. Here is how Mt. Juliet, Lebanon and the Donelson area stack up on each.

1. Where is the medical care near Mt. Juliet and Lebanon?

In Wilson County, Vanderbilt Wilson County Hospital in Lebanon is the county's hospital for inpatient and outpatient care. Its services include an emergency department with a trauma center and primary stroke center, a chest pain center, geriatrics, and cardiac rehabilitation. In Mt. Juliet itself, you will find Vanderbilt Heart Mt. Juliet (cardiology), Vanderbilt Orthopaedics Mt. Juliet, and Ascension Saint Thomas Heart Mt. Juliet. Vanderbilt University Medical Center is in Nashville, about 17 miles from Mt. Juliet.

Tell me which specialists matter most to you and I will map the drive times from any home you are considering.

2. Where can you stay active and connected?

  • Mt. Juliet Senior Activity Center (2034 N. Mt. Juliet Road) serves adults 55 and older with social, educational and recreational activities. Members mention yoga, tai chi, exercise classes and day trips. Beyond the classes, the center is known for dancing, games, and trips, including trips as far away as Italy. It is a place to stay busy and make friends, not just to exercise.

  • FiftyForward Donelson Station supports adults 50 and older with programs for healthy aging, connection and lifelong engagement, and serves more than 800 older adults in the Donelson area.

  • Pickleball and fitness. Mt. Juliet Parks and Recreation has offered 55+ pickleball for a small fee after membership, and Nashville's Metro Parks senior program includes dance clubs for adults 55 and older. Confirm current schedules and prices before you plan around them.

  • Inside a community. Del Webb Lake Providence and Del Webb Barton Village each have clubhouses, pools and a staffed activity calendar, which suits people who want activities built in.

3. Where can you walk in Mt. Juliet?

The CDC says adults 65 and older need at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, such as brisk walking. That is 30 minutes on five days. Regular activity also lowers the risk of falling, supports independence, and is good for brain health. Please check with your doctor before starting a new routine.

Mt. Juliet makes that easy. The city lists several designated greenways, including:

Trail

Length

Good to know

Cedar Creek Greenway

About 3.4 miles

Paved, starts at Charlie Daniels Park

Town Center Trail

About 2.5 miles

Runs through the middle of Mt. Juliet

Providence Greenway

About 2.9 miles

Near Providence Marketplace

Golden Bear Trail

About 2.25 miles

Listed on the city's greenway map

The city's paved trails are open dawn to dusk and allow mobility devices. Long Hunter State Park, a short drive away, has longer hiking options for days when you want something more.

My honest take

A beautiful house in the wrong place is a hard thing to live with. Ask where your doctors are, where you will make friends, and where you will walk every morning. I will help you answer those questions before you ever see a floor plan.
